A recent video showing a Mississippi fire dept. operating at a vehicle fire with exposures to a trailer house has gone viral and has caused a firestorm of criticism across the fire service community. Now you can watch the video and form your own opinion on the operation, but in the mean time lets use this as a “training tool” and break it down! Now I’m usually not a fan of critiquing a operation that I was not at by just watching a video but you can clearly see what is wrong here.

Most of the comments I have seen have been about the lack of PPE, which is obvious! No SCBA, no PPE, half of their PPE, bottom line…if you don’t have proper PPE on you should not enter the fire ground! Nursing scrubs and jeans with just rubber bunker boots are not safe and have no place on the fire ground, even if you just pulling hose! One of the first things I noticed was the lack of urgency and what appeared to be experience, as you can see at the 30 second mark, the firefighters stopped fighting the fire and seemed to be confused on what to do. Now if I was the homeowner I would be very unhappy with the lack of urgency and property conservation the firefighters are showing, after all it is part of our job!

Overall, I’m sure the fire got put out! The right and safest way? Not so much! PPE is one thing but being prepared is another. Obviously they approached this fire somewhat the wrong way, the video did show them putting the exposure fire out(the trailer) which is good but when you don’t control the fire that is impinging on the exposure then you are defeating the purpose! Take a look at this video and form your own opinion!

This is another one the we could “learn” from! Watch out for those power lines…they hurt!
